Creating repeating and growing patterns for Algebra

Image
The last few days we have been challenging each other with working out if we have been making repeating or growing patterns in Maths.  We have also been finding ways to make a code to follow so that we can name the patterns we have also been making or studying, and also beginning to predict what will come next in the sequence. Today we began working on increasing and decreasing pattern sequences, and how tables can be made to show the changing patterns.  Our next challenge for tomorrow is to use each other's creations to predict what might come in the 5th, 10th or 12th position, or even the number of cubes we would need to make them.

Our return to class learning and distance zoomers

Image
We are enjoying having our distance learners zooming in to join the students in class for Literacy and Maths.  It can be a bit of a juggle, but everyone seems to be enjoying catching up, and still being able to learn alongside each other. This week in Maths we have really been getting the hang of early algebra, working out sequences and repeating patterns. Earlier in the week the class based students used interlocking cubes to challenge those at home to work out their patterns, and what would be the next colours in their sequences. One or two even made minor changes to see whether the others could see slight changes in order of their blocks. Meleane on Friday set us all, students at home and those in class, the challenge to work out whether she was using a repeating or non repeating pattern.  There were a few tricks to hers too.  Can you work out which are repeating or non repeating pattern sequences? Perhaps join us over this coming week where we are learning about increasing or decr

Lockdown at home - baking with Luke

Image
Many of you have tried different types of baking and cooking while you have been on lockdown.  You have shared your mugcakes, birthday cakes, dinners and other culinary delights while learning at home. It's not often you get to sit in with an Intermediate class when you are a Year 3 or Year 4, but like most families, Luke's mum has been working from home and teaching.  He joined her class the other day to make biscuits.  His Mum even gave us a report on how he went: Luke baked biscuits with my class this morning. He did a great job keeping up with one of our teachers and only need a little help.  They tasted delicious.  Ka rawe Luke, they look delicious too.

Life in the Bubble school class

Image
While many of us have been working at home from the family dining table, Cyrus has been at school in one of the class bubbles. This last week he has worked on our class writing task from the Distance Learning page, along with tasks happening in the classroom. This week he also created a picture that looked like the fireworks in the sky over the weekend, and figured out a way to make a Rube Goldberg type marble run.  They both look like great creations to get involved with. Ka Rawe Cyrus.

Razan's animated slideshow

Razan has been interested in what her older brother has been doing in the Digital Classes during Distance Learning.  He has shown and helped her to create her own animated slideshow. Ka Rawe, Razan and Imbrahim The motorboat   Click this link to view

Return to school message for parents

Image
We are hoping that you have had a chance to read through the school Panui that was sent out on Friday.  Hopefully you have seen there is a questionaire to give us an indication of how many students we will have return, if the go ahead is given for us to return to school on Monday 15 November. If you have not replied already, could you please go on and do so?  There are also some questions about how you would like school to be managed if we do return. Thanks  Lesley and Rebecca Survey Link - Indicative Return to School We invite families to complete the following survey to help us better meet your needs as we continue Distance Learning and plan for the opening of school once advised by the Ministry of Education. It would be greatly appreciated if you could complete this survey by 10 November.   Link   to survey     https://docs.google.com/forms/ d/e/ 1FAIpQLSdgy0LTcQWKaSjM5kmwlw1b xSuUupVxmDMDfLfi8sVF_rRU8w/ viewform?usp=sf_link

Food Floating density experiment

Image
Joshua and Caleb made a number of predictions of what foods would or would not float in water. Joshua has also been able to explain what density is, and why the size or weight of the food is not an easy predictor as to if it will float or sink. Ka Rawe Joshua.

Diwali Dias making in Bubble School

Image
Cyrus has been working on making a colourful Dias in Bubble School for Diwali.  If you look carefully you can see his finished work in the window display too.  He has also been working on building his origami skills with Petuela.  Ka Rawe Cyrus.

Designing a Diwali Rangoli

Image
Joshua used his ideas of geometric shape, rotational symmetry and transformation to create a Rangoli for his family.  He planned it out first using a dot template, similar to the video we viewed in Maths. He then carefully enlarged it using coloured chalk. Great work Joshua - totally using your maths knowledge in a real life context. Doesn't it look great?

Will it float or will it sink? Checking out fruit and vege density in water.

Image
Ethan has been predicting and checking out what fruit and veges have low density and will float in water.  There have been a few surprises, with Ethan noticing that the size, weight and shape of the different foods is not a great indicator of what will sink in a bowl of water.  One of his biggest surprises was a Bell Pepper/Capsicum.
