5 Senses Summer Challenge - being the illustrator

Image
We have been working on using descriptive words in our writing to help our readers “see the picture” in their heads. We have also been using the 5 senses to help us write about our photo inspiration of a little boy mowing the lawn. Our backyard - 5 senses summer challenge By Ethan I see small birds chirping in the trees. I smell dog poo that was in the grass. I hear lots of bees buzzing in the beehive. I feel really wet grass on my feet. I wondered if the lawnmower would break. I felt the squishy dog poo on my feet. Our backyard - 5 senses summer challenge By Joshua I felt spikey grass on my feet in the backyard. I felt the hot sun shining on my back. I heard the birds chirping in the tall trees. I saw the people playing next door. I wondered if the lawnmower would break down. I wondered if I would hear sirens from the road. I smelt the fresh grass from next door. Our challenge today was to be the illustrators of two of our classmates writing, using the words they’d written to show t

Our Summer Challenge poem - Writers Circle

Image
We've been given a challenge to write a summer poem, that uses only 3 of our senses, based on a picture of a boy mowing a lawn.  Stage 1 was to draw and then brainstorm some ideas for the sounds and smells we would have on a summer's day while lawns are being mown in the neighbourhood. Today's stage was to read the mentor's piece of writing, and look at the set out and language used. Using highlighters we located nouns, verbs and adjectives; talking about how they were used and what they do in a piece of writing. Our next stage is to write our own, and share with each other so that we can make it come alive for our readers.

Week 6: Daily 5 - Read to Someone and STEAM

Image
We have enjoyed learning how to Read to Someone as part of our Daily 5 independent reading activities. It was great reading to a buddy, and listening to them read to us. We started a STEAM unit with Room 7 called The Great Pioneer Town. Our first task was to design, make and test a water filter using found natural objects at school. Some groups made such good filters that the murky water was quite clean after being filtered!

Zoom Meetings - when we get together to talk about our learning, and have the chance to be a class together online.

Image
As we begin to get back into the hang of doing Zoom meetings, we need to review some of the norms and expectations for how they should run. Just like in class where we have talked about how each of our New Windsor Way values show in our Learner Behaviour rubric, we should also be thinking how "Prepared for Learning", "Mat Space", "Group Work" and "Outside the Classroom"can also be used in our Distance Learning.  A key place is how our Zoom meetings run when we are all on our computers at home. Please watch this video link, and create a list of things you believe need to be refined or improved on by the people attending this Zoom Meeting. Do we need to share some of these to make our Zoom Meetings better too for everyone attending? GOOGLE MEETING CHALLENGE
